Keys, piano, harmonica, bandleader
This is Joe Nichols (a.k.a. ‘Nickles The Cat’). Joe is the bandleader, principal composer and father of Nimbus Sextet. A pianist, keyboardist, virtuoso harmonica player and multi instrumentalist, Joe began his musical journey in Aberdeen as a drummer. After hearing Herbie Hancock’s ‘Head Hunters’ in his early teens, he fell in love with the keys and has never looked back. He first met Mischa Stevens and Alex Palmer at Edinburgh University, with whom he formed the funk-fusion group Jambouree and fostered a creative partnership that has gone from strength to strength. Nimbus Sextet is the convergence of Joe’s musical worlds: jazz, funk, neo-soul, hip-hop, trance, West African, Afro-Cuban. ‘Dreams Fulfilled’ realises his musical vision and expresses this alchemy. It tells of the vicissitudes of life, the formation of a musical voice through collaboration, and the paths taken to get there. It is a personal arrival of sorts, embracing organic influences from diverse walks of experience. Jazz is a by-word for freedom of expression and improvisation, welcoming everything into its home. We embody this ethos; ‘Dreams Fulfilled’ is that home.
This is Martin Fell. Half Scottish, half Czech, Martin is an experienced saxophonist, clarinetist and composer with diverse musical experience from jazz to klezmer. Martin’s passionate performances are a huge part of the Nimbus sound, bringing an unabashed spontaneity and raw emotion that mirrors the energy and ethos of the rhythm section. As well as being an immense sax player, Martin’s teashop ‘Tchai Ovna’ is also a Glasgow institution. Martin has brought his A game and dedication to Nimbus since day one, and showcases two of his fantastic compositions on our debut album: ‘Lily White’ and ‘Klara’.’
This is Euan Allardice. One of three Aberdonians in the band, Euan is an excellent trumpeter with a deep musical sensibility that is showcased throughout our debut album. His evocative solos lift the music to new heights, while his excellent ensemble playing shows his seasoned experience from working in a variety of musical styles from Son Cubano through to musical theatre and jazz. Euan completed the Nimbus line up way back in spring 2018, and has brought class and mastery ever since.
This is James Mackay. Aged 21, Glasgow’s own James is the Nimbus guitarist in residence. James is a superb team player and soloist. His comping style and harmonic understanding brings colour, richness and depth to the music and elevates the soloists around him. His advanced jazz vocabulary is clear to see in his own exhilarating solos, and he has a sound that incorporates the best of jazz guitar legends such as Jim Hall with modern pioneers like Kurt Rosenwinkel. James absolutely shone on our recent UK Tour; he has tonnes to offer and is primed to take things by storm!
Bass guitar, percussion
This is Mischa Stevens. A maestro bassist and multi instrumentalist of super soulful and funky proportions, Mischa is a creative visionary whose energy, feel and love for music radiates off him. He has developed a musical telepathy with Joe and Alex that has been nurtured over many years, and now defines the Nimbus sound. His own organic sound is borne from his love of roots music, as well as funk, neo-soul and folk. Wherever he goes, he expresses musical joy and zestiness. You can see this joy at every gig, where he brings the room to life with his deep sense of groove and inimitable playing style and stage performance.
This is Alex Palmer. Alex is a deeply intuitive and melodic drummer, with a unique musical ear and conversational style that is integral to the Nimbus sound. A creative partner since day one, Joe met Alex busking under a bridge in Edinburgh six years ago. What ensued was a musical bond that endures to this day. Growing up on jazz, tech metal and a melting pot of musical influences and experiences, Alex’s versatility and tasteful interplay underpins every Nimbus performance, and his unique musical voice and responsiveness shines through, bringing out the best in all of us.
